Many of you will know, or know of, local writer and Guardian country diarist, Nic Wilson (right), who volunteered for Triangle Garden for several years. Nic has written a memoir on nature, place and chronic illness, Land Beneath the Waves, which explores her relationship with landscape and place, including Hitchin’s chalklands which are referenced in the title.
The chapter ‘The Nightingale’s Tale’ follows the story of Hitchin’s forgotten nightingales and the visit made by America’s most well-known nature writer, John Burroughs, to the Triangle area of Hitchin in 1882, a spot that was famous across the UK for the elusive songster.
Land Beneath the Waves is published by Summersdale/Hachette. Its local launch will take place at Next Page Books in Hitchin on 12 June at 7pm and Nic will be talking about the book at David’s Bookshop in Letchworth on 19 June. Tickets for both events are now on sale. The book is available for pre-order at all good bookshops and signed copies can be bought from the launch and from David’s Bookshop.
